Plymouth Rock is a regional auto insurance provider based in Boston. The company prides itself on a high standard of customer service, and for the most part it can back up that claim. Current and potential customers can expect to work with local agents to find a mix of coverages and plenty of discounts. Plymouth Rock is available in only six states, making its footprint small but strong, and we named it one of the best car insurance companies in New Jersey. I found its offerings to be particularly robust, especially when compared to large national auto insurance companies.

We’ve reviewed dozens of insurance companies in addition to Plymouth Rock, including the best companies for military members & veterans and the cheapest companies for any driver.

Quick Look: Plymouth Rock Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Local agents

  • Robust set of discounts and perks

  • Affordable rates

Cons

  • Only operates in six states

  • Website could be clearer about coverage options

Who Is Plymouth Rock Auto Insurance Best For?

To state the obvious first: Plymouth Rock is best for auto insurance customers in the six states in which they operate. Drivers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania can consider getting auto insurance quotes from Plymouth Rock.

If you live in one of those states and want affordable rates and many coverage options, you should get a quote from Plymouth Rock.

How Much Does Plymouth Rock Car Insurance Cost?

The average annual premium for a full coverage auto insurance policy from Plymouth Rock is $1,513—this is 24 percent lower than the national average and one of the lowest rates I found when I compared Plymouth Rock to other carriers. Erie, a Pennsylvania-based insurance provider, is the only company I found with a lower rate ($1,495). That’s a point in favor of regional insurance companies over the big guys!

Demographics play a huge role in your auto insurance premium. For example, teen drivers should expect to pay an average of $2,085 for a policy with Plymouth Rock, and older drivers between $1,656 and $1,716.

Plymouth Rock: Customer Satisfaction Data

Plymouth Rock’s NAIC Complaint Index number is 0.74, meaning the company has fewer complaints than expected. I filtered the results to include only private passenger complaints and saw even better results—0.33.1 That’s a great sign!

A less-than-ideal result came from J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. Plymouth Rock earned 807 out of 1,000 points in the Mid-Atlantic region, lower than the regional average by 23 points. In New England, Plymouth Rock received 795 points which is 21 points lower than the average of 816.2

My research leads me to believe that Plymouth Rock does cater to its customers through local agents and robust coverage options. It’s also pretty cost-effective—one of the best customer satisfaction indicators.

Filing a Claim with Plymouth Rock

You can file a claim online and track it online or over the phone via your claims representative. I’m not a customer, so my ability to rate how they handle claims first-hand is limited. What follows is third-party research that helped me assess Plymouth Rock’s claims process. Based on AM Best’s analysis, Plymouth Rock has a solid financial outlook. The company’s rating is an A-, which translates to “Excellent” claims-paying ability and credit quality which has remained steady for at least the past 5 years.3

To further assess Plymouth Rock’s claims-paying reputation, I consulted one of my new favorite resources—CRASH Network’s Insurer Report Card. This survey’s methodology asks body shops to award each company a grade from “A+” to “F” based on the question: “How well does this insurer’s claims handling policies, attitude, and payment practices ensure quality repairs and customer service for motorists?”

Plymouth Rock holds a grade of B- from CRASH Network, ranking 34th out of 88 companies total. That’s pretty good, considering the highest score earned by any of the top ten largest insurance companies is a C+. The company just missed out on the survey’s Honor Roll (top 25 companies) because it did not score an overall grade of “B” or higher across all 50 states. I wasn’t sure if this was because its coverage area is smaller than other insurers, but the North Carolina Farm Bureau is the top scorer. Plymouth Rock did rank second overall in the New England region, where it received a regional grade of “B.”4

Plymouth Rock’s Website and Mobile App

Plymouth Rock’s website is pretty user-friendly, but I had trouble accessing the discount pages for some states. It also took more research to determine whether Plymouth Rock offered each discount or coverage or whether the website defined the terms. If all you want is to get a quote or view/pay your policy, it should be no problem.

The app reviews are strongly positive about Plymouth Rock’s customer service and the ratings are high. Here’s a download of the app’s features:

  • View all policies and billing summaries on one page
  • Access mobile insurance ID cards
  • Save bank account info and make payments
  • Report and manage claims
  • Add new cars, drivers, addresses, and payment plans to your policy

Methodology – How We Review Insurance Companies

I begin my research with third-party ratings and reviews. This helps me situate the company within the industry landscape and assess the potential pitfalls, rather than getting caught by marketing pitches. Then I dive into the company’s website to corroborate or dispute the third-party assessments. Finally, I layer my experience looking for auto insurance on top of the information to determine what types of customers can benefit from the auto insurance company.

In addition, all AutoInsurance.com reviews account for the following:

  1. Value: A provider’s average premiums and discounts relative to the quality of coverage and service.
  2. Coverages: Whether a company offers additional protections above the state requirements, like rental reimbursement, GAP coverage, and rideshare coverage.
  3. Customer satisfaction: As measured by third-party data from sources like the Better Business Bureau, NAIC, and others.
  4. Claims handling: The timeliness, quality, and experience of filing a claim, evaluated by independent sources including CRASH Network and J.D. Power.
  5. Digital tools and technology: The user-friendliness of websites, mobile applications, and online account management functionalities, evaluated by our first hand experience and customer reviews.
