Clearcover has a smooth digital experience and lower-than-average rates, but its claims process raises questions.
Clearcover describes itself as “Next-gen car insurance that’s fast, easy, and affordable.” The insurer professes to pay out some claims in as little as 7 minutes, thanks to the help of artificial intelligence. But does Clearcover live up to its promises?
As a writer for AutoInsurance.com, I’m always looking for affordable insurance rates and great customer service. Based on my research and experience as a potential customer, I found that Clearcover is geared toward tech-savvy drivers and offers a streamlined customer experience. The digital-first car insurance company provides some add-on coverages like rideshare insurance, as well as a handful of discounts. Our research shows that while Clearcover is equipped to fulfill claims payouts, it’s inconsistent when it comes to approving claims.
We named Clearcover one of the best auto insurance companies for military members thanks to its generous military discount. Below, I’ll guide you through our team’s research and my personal experience shopping with the company to help you decide whether Clearcover is the right provider.
User-friendly app and digital-first experience
Lower-than-average rates

Overall, Clearcover is great for drivers who are looking for low car insurance rates and a convenient way to manage their policies.
On average, Clearcover costs $1,830 per year for full coverage and $520 per year for minimum coverage — around 4 percent below the national average. Keep in mind that your actual premium with Clearcover will likely differ than the average, especially with available discounts, which we’ll discuss in greater detail later.
Below, check out the table to see how Clearcover compares to other insurers:
Company | Average annual premium for full coverage | Average annual premium for minimum coverage |
---|---|---|
National average | $1,924 | $547 |
AAA | $2,211 | $894 |
Allstate | $2,639 | $597 |
American Family | $1,785 | $713 |
Clearcover | $1,830 | $520 |
Farmers | $2,320 | $634 |
GEICO | $1,572 | $413 |
Nationwide | $1,805 | $613 |
Progressive | $1,891 | $481 |
State Farm | $1,697 | $482 |
With Clearcover, your eligible auto insurance discounts are automatically included in your quote. The only discount amount it specifies applies to military members, who get 25 percent off. So, you’ll need a quote to see exactly how much the discounts impact your potential premium. Moreover, some discounts only apply to some states — for example, customers in Louisiana get an extra 25 percent off with the military discount, and their children also qualify for the discount.
You can enjoy a discount on your premiums for the following:
Clearcover is geared towards digitally savvy customers and offers a quick and easy way to get quotes. You can get a quote online, either on desktop or mobile. When you kickstart the quote process, Clearcover even gives you an overview of the steps to expect.
Unfortunately, I can’t speak to the entire experience because Clearcover doesn’t offer coverage to new customers in California. This is a recent development, as the provider previously insured California drivers.
Interestingly, when I entered a Pennsylvania address, I received the same message that Clearcover is not available in my state, despite the fact that Clearcover used to insure drivers in Pennsylvania.
To me, this indicates Clearcover may be pulling back on its covered areas, which raises potential concerns. Additionally, Clearcover’s website is not transparent about which states it sells insurance in.
Clearcover provides standard auto insurance coverages, like liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, and medical payments.
When choosing your policy, I always recommend opting for coverage limits beyond your state’s minimum requirements. This ensures that you’ll be protected if a major accident occurs, avoiding paying out-of-pocket for damages. Minimum liability usually isn’t enough to cover damages in serious incidents. Even if you’re on a budget, it helps to increase your coverage limits even a little to suit what you feel comfortable paying for.
Clearcover doesn’t offer accident forgiveness, and its add-on coverage options are less robust compared to major insurers. Still, the additional coverages it does offer are useful: you can sign up for roadside assistance, ridesharing, and alternative transportation.
Here’s a closer look at these coverages:
Coverage type | What it covers |
---|---|
Roadside assistance | Towing, vehicle lockout support, and emergency gas delivery |
Rideshare | Covers the period between rides when rideshare drivers are working but do not have a passenger in the vehicle |
Alternative transportation | Pays for any alternative transportation method if an accident renders your car undrivable |
Since Clearcover is a smaller provider, it isn’t rated by the independent bodies our team typically uses for third-party data, like J.D. Power, CRASH Network, or AM Best. However, we can still refer to other sources to see how satisfied drivers are at Clearcover.
According to Demotech, an independent financial agency, Clearcover has an exceptional rating for financial strength, so you can count on them to fulfill claims payouts.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) gave Clearcover a complaint index score of 8.91, meaning the insurer received 8.91 times more complaints than other companies of a similar size. Also, NAIC reported 51 complaints that same year, 10 of which were related to policy nonrenewal, and 7 related to policy cancellation. From the numbers, it’s clear that customers are having trouble getting continuous coverage from Clearcover.
The Better Business Bureau has accredited Clearcover since 2017, giving the company an A+ rating. However, it has an aggregated score of 2.96 stars out of five from 93 customer reviews. Many complaints mention having their policies terminated without warning or being notified that they aren’t eligible for policy renewals. Others point to challenges getting claims payouts and being denied coverage in eligible incidents.
Category | Clearcover’s score |
---|---|
Demotech1 | A – Exceptional |
National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)2 | 8.91 — Higher than average number of complaints |
Better Business Bureau Customer Reviews3 | 2.96 stars (out of 5) |
If you need to file a claim, you can do so using the Clearcover app or over the phone. Clearcover recommends using its app so it can estimate your claims payout immediately using its AI technology. To file a claim, make sure you have the following information:
Clearcover advertises on its website that its claims payout record is 7 minutes. However, some customer reviews mention that it’s taken much longer for them or that their claims were denied altogether. Typically, how long a claim takes depends on the extent of the damage among other factors. It’s worth taking this information into account before purchasing a policy — after all, it’s important for providers to be reliable during the claims process.
Since Clearcover is technology-focused, its customer experience revolves around the mobile app. You can still file claims on its website, though you’ll need to use the app for nearly everything else, including managing your policy. While I can’t speak to the app experience since I’m not a Clearcover customer, there’s plenty of information available from the reviews for the iPhone and Android apps.
The iPhone app has a 4.7-star rating aggregated from 13,200 ratings, though there are only a few written reviews. Most of the reviews are unrelated to the app — a couple are from young drivers who secured low rates from the provider, while others are complaints about having their policies abruptly cancelled. In an app-related review, one customer mentioned having trouble completing payment because the app froze.
Meanwhile, the Android app has 4.4 stars aggregated from 4,750 ratings. Many reviews mention that the app is user-friendly and easy to navigate. Also, customers report enjoying the convenience of its features — they can access a live chat with an agent, get roadside assistance, and pay premiums all in one place.
App | Rating (out of 5) |
---|---|
iPhone (App Store) | 4.7 stars |
Android (Google Play) | 4.5 stars |
