Diving history is a major factor in car insurance rates, which is why rates generally increase after an at-fault accident. Certain factors also contribute to increased rates after accidents, such as a history of traffic violations or multiple accidents within a short period of time.
Like Travelers, USAA offers a way to prevent your premium from increasing after your first at-fault accident. If you previously remained accident-free for five consecutive years, you’ll qualify for USAA’s free accident forgiveness policy, and USAA will add it to your policy automatically. If you do not qualify for free accident forgiveness, you can add it to your policy as optional coverage. It’s important to note that USAA’s free accident forgiveness is per policy rather than per driver.
As a leading insurance company across the country, Allstate offers comprehensive auto insurance plans for a diverse customer base, along with many ways to save. Since Allstate offers plenty of insurance products in addition to auto insurance, many customers find great savings when they bundle their Allstate policies. For example, drivers in Kentucky who buy and bundle policies with Allstate save up to 25 percent.

Allstate is also a good option for those who prefer to work with an agent rather than purchase and manage their policies online. Like State Farm, Allstate uses a large network of local agents to sell and manage policies, including in the following Kentucky cities and towns:
Additionally, Allstate has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), representing the company’s responsiveness to customers’ complaints.

State Farm’s collection of insurance products allows customers to bundle policies and save on their yearly premiums. Like Travelers, State Farm offers a wide selection of policy types for Kentucky drivers:
Working with a local agent can offer many benefits, including more localized knowledge and the ability to advise on the best policy options for you. State Farm has a wide network of local agents in Kentucky, with agents in 126 cities out of the state’s total of 419 cities. Some of those cities are listed below:
Travelers provides some of the most flexible and comprehensive coverage options in Kentucky at lower-than-average rates. It also offers coverage types you won’t find with every provider, including gap insurance, new-car replacement, accident forgiveness and non-owners insurance.
Along with USAA, Travelers offers some of the lowest rates for drivers in Kentucky. On average, full coverage from Travelers costs $1,702 annually, while minimum coverage costs $630. In both cases, these rates are significantly lower than the statewide averages of $2,444 and $881, respectively. USAA’s rates are the lowest, but because it’s available only to military members, veterans and their families, most Kentucky drivers on a budget will need to look elsewhere for their auto insurance.

Travelers stands out among our providers for its coverage offerings.
Coverage type | What it covers |
---|---|
Loan/lease gap insurance | If you’re in an accident and your vehicle is totaled, this coverage can pay the difference between the value of the vehicle and the amount still owed on the lease. This coverage is also offered by Allstate; it is offered by State Farm and USAA only if you financed with one of their loans. |
New-car replacement | Drivers with brand-new vehicles get Travelers’ new-car-replacement coverage. If you total your vehicle within the first five years of ownership, this coverage pays to replace it with a brand-new vehicle of the same model. To qualify, you must be the original owner and the model year must be the same year in which coverage is purchased. Travelers’ new-car coverage includes loan/lease gap coverage, which pays the difference between the cash value of the vehicle and any remaining balance on a leased car. It also includes glass deductible coverage, which can be applied in place of your comprehensive deductible for any window or windshield losses. |
Rideshare coverage | Rideshare drivers will likely have a gap between their personal coverage and the coverage offered by their rideshare company. Some auto insurance providers offer optional rideshare coverage, which can bridge this gap. Travelers’ rideshare protection covers the period when the driver is available for hire but has not accepted a ride. This coverage is also offered by State Farm, Allstate and USAA but not by Direct Auto. |
Accident forgiveness | As part of its Responsible Driver Plan, Travelers doesn’t increase your premium the first time you are involved in an at-fault accident. Travelers also offers minor-violation forgiveness, which stops your premiums from increasing the first time you commit a minor traffic violation. This is also offered by USAA and Allstate but not by State Farm. |
Non-owners insurance | Frequent drivers who do not own their vehicle may choose to purchase a non-owners policy. This insurance includes liability coverage and sometimes other coverage to help protect you and your passengers. Drivers considering non-owners insurance should contact a Travelers’ agent to discuss their best coverage options. |
Like State Farm, Travelers offers a wide selection of policy types, which makes it a great option for drivers who are looking to bundle. Travelers provides discounts for drivers who want to bundle their home, condo or renters insurance with their auto insurance, and in some cases, drivers may receive additional savings for bundling their auto insurance with one of these policies:
Direct Auto specializes in insuring drivers with less-than-spotless driving histories. High-risk drivers in Kentucky who have struggled to find coverage elsewhere will likely be accepted by Direct Auto. Additionally, its wide range of discounts helps customers save up to 25 percent on their premiums.
High-risk drivers can include those with a DUI, insurance lapses or other violations. Like most states, Kentucky also allows insurance companies to look at your credit score when determining rates, meaning low credit can also lead to a high-risk designation. Regardless of the state, high-risk drivers should expect their premiums to go up considerably.
Direct Auto is the only provider reviewed here that caters specifically to high-risk drivers, and it often insures drivers that other providers do not. Direct Auto doesn’t make its pricing data available, but its rates for high-risk drivers are known for being reasonable. It also offers an abundance of discounts so drivers can lower their premiums further.
FYI
Kentucky is one of the few U.S. states that do not require drivers to carry SR-22s to reinstate their driving privileges after receiving a conviction for driving under the influence or driving without insurance.
Direct Auto offers various discounts for customers in Kentucky:
Direct Auto lets you pay your bill in the way that works best for you. With Direct Auto, you’ll enjoy flexible payment schedules and various ways to pay, including the following methods:

Car insurance in Kentucky is more expensive than the national average for several reasons, including the state’s no-fault insurance system, which requires drivers to carry personal injury protection. Kentucky also has the sixth-highest rate of uninsured drivers in the country (18.7 percent, according to the Insurance Information Institute), which means that when insured drivers are involved in accidents with uninsured motorists, the costs can escalate, further driving up premiums.
As of November 2024, Kentucky remains a choice no-fault state, meaning the default is no-fault coverage. Kentucky drivers can choose to reject no-fault coverage by submitting a no-fault rejection form to the Department of Insurance. (Typically, your insurer will do this for you when you buy your policy.) Pennsylvania and New Jersey are the other two states that use this hybrid system.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, all Kentucky drivers must hold the following coverage policies:
State insurance requirements do not include collision or comprehensive coverage (though your lender might) or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.
According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, driving without the mandatory minimum auto insurance coverage may result in the following penalties.
Offense number | Minimum fine | Maximum fine | Jail time maximum | Registration suspension | License revocation? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
First | $500 | $1,000 | 90 days | One year | No |
Second and subsequent | $1,000 | $2,500 | 180 days | One year | Yes |
