Maine is one the cheapest states in the U.S for auto insurance. Its low rates are due in large part to the state’s low population density and uninsured driver rate—Maine has the lowest uninsured motorist rate in the country.1
Even as the cheapest provider in the nation, you may have noticed your premiums increase in recent years. Inflation, premium pauses due to COVID, and higher rates of claims have led to premium hikes (20 percent) across the country. If you’re feeling the pain of auto insurance increases, know that there are affordable options for quality insurance. Our team researched the best providers in Maine and leveraged smart shopping strategies to ensure we’ve found the best rates and best coverage for several driver types.
With an average rate of $1,244, Maine offers some of the cheapest average auto insurance rates in the country (nearly half the national average).
| Regional Average | Monthly average premium for full coverage | Annual average premium for full coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Maine | $104 | $1,244 |
| U.S. | $200 | $2,399 |

| City | Monthly average premium | Annual average premium |

| South Portland | $99 | $1,182 |
| Portland | $102 | $1,229 |
| Bangor | $103 | $1,232 |

The AARP has been offering discounts, benefits, and services to older Americans since 1958. And since its partnership with The Hartford in 1984, it’s provided car insurance to millions of Americans, which we named the best auto insurance for seniors. In Maine, its $960 annual average is the cheapest in the state, making it our top pick for drivers over the age of 50.
Did You Know?
Nearly 22 percent of residents are over the age 65 in Maine, making it the highest senior population per capita in the U.S. If you’re over the age of 50, we recommend you request a quote from the AARP to see what kind of plans you qualify for.3
With an annual average rate of $960 ($80 monthly), the AARP’s program is the cheapest provider for Mainers over the age of 50.
The AARP’s affordable rates are due, in large part, to two factors: first, Maine has some of the cheapest auto insurance rates in the country across the board. Most providers boast their cheapest average rates in Maine. And second, the AARP has several discounts, like an automatic 10 percent AARP membership discount, to help keep costs below.

GEICO pairs competitive rates with high customer service marks in New England, providing drivers with affordable insurance and quality benefits. On top of your standard full coverage options, GEICO offers additional services, like mechanical breakdown insurance and rental reimbursement.
GEICO is another affordable option in Maine. While a few other providers have cheaper rates — like USAA, Travelers, or MMG — we chose GEICO for its wide availability and high customer satisfaction scores. Unlike USAA, it has no eligibility requirements, and it scored higher than Travelers on J.D. Power’s most recent New England customer satisfaction survey (MMG was not rated).
Here’s a breakdown of how GEICO’s prices compare to other major providers in the state.
| Company | Full coverage monthly average in ME | Minimum coverage monthly average in ME |
|---|---|---|
| GEICO | $105 | $38 |
| USAA | $65 | $24 |
| Travelers | $71 | $43 |
| MMG | $86 | $32 |
| Farmers | $112 | Data unavailable |
| State Farm | $113 | $50 |
| Progressive | $114 | $52 |
| Allstate | $138 | $67 |
| Maine average | $104 | $43 |
If you’re a new driver, teen driver, or simply want to beef up your protection, GEICO offers a few ways to bolster your coverage. Beyond liability coverage, comprehensive and collision, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and medical payments, you can also get the following coverage options with GEICO:
Drivers in Maine who want extra protection for their car should consider GEICO’s mechanical breakdown insurance (MBI). It acts like an extended warranty, paying for costs if your vehicle breaks down — including replacement parts and labor. With this coverage, you can pay less for repairs in the long run while keeping your vehicle in great shape.
You qualify for this coverage if:
When you add MBI to your policy, you can renew it for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. For covered claims, you’ll pay a $250 deductible, an advantage since the average car repair costs $838.4 Taking advantage of MBI can also help your car retain its value over time, since well-maintained cars are worth more.
State Farm is the largest car insurance company in the U.S. and second-largest in Maine.5 It’s a household name, boasts impressive customer service scores, and offers all the standard coverages you might need as an everyday driver. It also offers some great incentives for safe drivers, which we’ll look at closely below.
Here are a few discounts State Farm offers to drivers in Maine:

| Good driver discount | No drivers in the household can have any moving violations or accidents and must be insured with State Farm for three years | Varies |

You can earn 10 percent off just for enrolling in Drive Safe & Save, State Farm’s usage-based insurance program. You can save an additional 30 percent at your next renewal if you exhibit safe driving habits with the program.
Here’s how it works. State Farm will send you a small transponder that attaches to your windshield. Your Drive Safe & Save app will pair to your transponder via Bluetooth, allowing State Farm to track your driving habits on the following metrics:
The safer you drive, the higher discount you’ll get; however, if you exhibit poor driving habits your premiums could actually increase.
State Farm offers a sleek, seamless experience for mobile users. Its dashboard is intuitive, making it easy to manage all of your auto insurance needs, including any usage-based programs you sign up for, directly through the app.
Here’s how customers have rated State Farm’s apps:
| App | iPhone rating out of 5 stars | Android rating out of 5 stars |
|---|---|---|
| State Farm Mobile app | 4.8 stars | 4.6 stars |
| Drive Safe & Save | 4.5 stars | 4.1 stars |
| Steer Clear (safe driving discount for young drivers) | 4.7 stars | 4.5 stars |
Travelers has offered insurance for over 170 years and is known for its affordable rates. Our research indicates that it has the lowest premiums for drivers with less than stellar records — including at-fault accidents, DUIs, and speeding tickets. Additionally, Travelers boasts a low NAIC complaint index, so high-risk drivers can enjoy cheap rates and solid customer service.
Even with one minor speeding ticket, your insurance rates may increase. If you get caught speeding significantly higher than the speed limit, while under the influence of alcohol, or several times in quick succession, you can expect those increases to be even higher.
Travelers offers the most competitive rates for drivers with a bad record, including drivers with moving violations. Here’s a breakdown of its rates compared to other providers:
| Company | Monthly average rate after a speeding ticket | Annual average rate after a speeding ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Travelers | $98 | $1,180 |
| MMG | $108 | $1,293 |
| GEICO | $119 | $1,432 |
| Progressive | $141 | $1,686 |
| State Farm | $149 | $1,792 |
| Allstate | $143 | $1,717 |
| Farmers | $207 | $2,483 |
Drivers with accidents tend to pay more for car insurance because insurance companies consider them riskier than drivers with no violations or accidents. If you have an accident on your record, it’s worth shopping for a quote from Travelers.
| Company | Monthly average rate after an accident | Annual average rate after an accident |
|---|---|---|
| Travelers | $102 | $1,222 |
| MMG | $104 | $1,247 |
| State Farm | $131 | $1,571 |
| GEICO | $172 | $2,058 |
| Allstate | $184 | $2,213 |
| Progressive | $186 | $2,236 |
| Farmers | $246 | $2,949 |
Similar to moving violations and speeding tickets, drivers with DUIs will see a premium increase in Maine. Travelers again has the cheapest average rates in this category.
| Company | Monthly average rate after a DUI | Annual average rate after a DUI |
|---|---|---|
| Travelers | $108 | $1,296 |
| Progressive | $132 | $1,581 |
| MMG | $144 | $1,725 |
| Allstate | $184 | $2,204 |
| State Farm | $187 | $2,249 |
| GEICO | $252 | $3,020 |
| Farmers | $280 | $3,363 |
Maine Mutual Group (MMG) is a regional insurance company that offers several insurance types, including auto insurance, to New England residents. With over 125 years of service, it’s based in Maine and has hundreds of independent agents across the state. MMG offers all the standard coverage options you’d expect from the big names, along with affordable options for good drivers and those considered high-risk.
Like Travelers, MMG has some of the lowest premiums across driving profiles. The company even offers rates that are more affordable than Travelers for teens, making it a great option for families with young drivers. It has especially cheap premiums for drivers with an at-fault accident and poor credit.
| Driver Category | MMG Annual Average Rate | Statewide Average | Percentage Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean record | $1,026 | $1,244 | -17% |
| Speeding Ticket | $1,293 | $1,416 | -9% |
| At-fault accident | $1,222 | $1,738 | -30% |
| DUI | $1,725 | $2,082 | -17% |
| Teens | $3,121 | $3,774 | -17% |
| Poor credit | $1,651 | $2,234 | -26% |
One of the advantages of MMG is its strong community connections as a regional provider. If you get into a covered accident and your vehicle needs repairs, you can take it to one of its 29 partners in the Direct Repair Program.
With the Direct Repair Program, MMG works with local shops for a smooth repair experience so you can get your car on the road sooner. Their partner shops conduct on-site estimates, meaning that the repair work starts more quickly. MMG also directly pays the auto shop that performs the repairs and offers a 100 percent guarantee on all repairs by its program partners.
As an MMG customer, you can expect stellar customer service and financial stability. Since the company is a small regional provider, it doesn’t have ratings from J.D. Power’s Auto Insurance and Claims Satisfaction studies.
However, MMG has an A+ rating from the BBB and has been accredited since 2017. The provider also has an A (excellent) rating from AM Best, so you can expect it to have the financial backing to pay for claims.6
Maine actually offers one of the lowest car insurance rates in the nation. The average premium for full coverage in Maine is about 48 percent cheaper than countrywide rates. It boasts cheaper rates due to low uninsured motorist rates and low population density. That said, car insurance premiums nationally have risen significantly since 2020, including in Maine.
You need the following minimum car insurance to drive legally in Maine:
USAA ($24 monthly) and MMG ($32 monthly) offer the cheapest liability-only insurance in Maine, on average.
Maine is a fault state, which means the driver who is responsible for a car accident is also responsible for compensating the other party for damages/injuries.
Maine functions under modified comparative legislation, meaning if you are less than 50 percent at fault, you’re eligible to collect a percentage of damages/injuries that you are not responsible for. For example, if you’re responsible for 30 percent of fault in an accident, you’ll be eligible to recover 70 percent of the damages. If you are 51 percent responsible for an accident, you won’t be eligible to collect any of the damages from the other party.
No, Maine does not offer a state-run car insurance program for low-income drivers. If you’re struggling to find affordable car insurance, we recommend comparing quotes between the state’s most affordable providers–USAA, AARP (The Hartford), MMG, Travelers, and GEICO.
To determine the best auto insurance companies in Maine, we evaluated insurers across four key categories—pricing, claims handling, customer experience, and coverage options. Here’s a breakdown of how each category was assessed:
