How to Find the Cheapest Car Insurance Rates in Virginia

  1. Bundle your policies: Most auto insurance providers offer bundling discounts when you purchase multiple policies with them. These discounts typically apply when you combine auto insurance with homeowners, renters, motorcycle or life insurance.
  2. Increase your deductible: Increasing your comprehensive and collision deductibles will lower your premium. However, it means higher out-of-pocket costs before your coverage kicks in if you file a claim. If you choose to go this route, make sure you can afford to pay a higher deductible.
  3. Apply discounts: Most auto insurance providers offer plenty of discounts, but the types of discounts offered can vary significantly from company to company. For example, some providers offer higher discounts for federal workers, while others may offer car insurance discounts for teens with good grades. Work with a local agent to determine if all available discounts are applied to your policy.
  4. Practice safe driving habits: Maintaining a clean driving record, with no recent at-fault accidents or violations, is one of the best ways to keep insurance rates low. If you do have a mark on your record, but generally drive safely, you can save by enrolling in a telematics program that tracks your driving habits with an app or device.
  5. Get multiple quotes: Each insurance company calculates rates slightly differently, so one company may quote you much lower than another. We recommend comparing quotes from at least three providers to get cheaper rates.

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Virginia

As of July 1, 2024, minimum coverage auto insurance is legally required in Virginia (before that, Virginians could pay a $500 uninsured motorist fee instead of carrying auto insurance).

The state requires liability coverage with the following minimum limits:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000

FYI:

As of January 2025, Virginia’s legal auto insurance limits increased by $5,000 for property damage, $20,000 for bodily injury per person and $40,000 for bodily injury per accident.4

Minimum requirements are higher in Virginia compared to other states, but keep in mind that liability coverage only pays for the other party’s injuries and damages — not your own. We recommend increasing liability limits to 100/300/100 and adding full coverage (including uninsured motorist, comprehensive and collision) if you can afford it. If you loaned or leased your vehicle, your lender will likely require you to carry insurance above the state minimum.
